MORE MRS. LOVETT, REVIEWS AND SIGNINGS!

Here's the inks to yesterday's pencils.

Also, i spotted a few of Frankenstein reviews as well as a plug on Sci-Fi online. The reviews are here and also on Grovel (where the art gets 4 stars. That's so Fetch!)

Also, this coming Saturday, i'm returning triumphantly to Aberdeen, Scotland for a signing in Asylum Books and Games. I drew all of Frankenstein in a studio underneath the shop, so it'll be great to go back to unveil the finished product. It'll be 'Ace.'

yeah:
"...Shalvey (or perhaps his colourists) give the monster’s eyes a bright, yellow glow, which certainly stands out on the page but isn’t quite authentic."

whaaaaaaaaa?

Ah yeah, he had a point; it's not as described in the book, but sure, it is a graphic novel adaptation; some liberties have to be taken to make it visually interesting. But if the eyes are the only complaint, i can live with that.

hey Declan,
thanks for finding me here! Great to hear from the man who is in all liklihood the inspiration for Michael's son's name! ;) I hope we can get together in Feb at the nyc comicon and have a few. Glad you are keeping busy with comic work! It will be good to catch up at the con!
Best,
Jack

Well I'm glad you appreciated the review Declan, even if your fans and colleagues did not. In response to my own critics here, I feel I should point out that these books are marketed as being sympathetic graphic novelisations of the original books. It's the strong link to the original work of fiction that marks their high quality and serious nature. I personally thought that adding glow-in-the-dark eyes to a creature made from the sewn together parts of dead bodies to be a significant enough step away from this attitude (and you can see Shelley's original description of the creatures eyes quoted in the review) to make it worthy of mention. While that and the slightly hurried feel of the abridged text are my main criticisms, I still think the book is excellent, will certainly appeal to Frankenstein fans, and that Declan has done an otherwise fantastic job of making the story bleak, scary and authentic.

Hey Leigh, thanks man! I reckon you only like the new blog header cuz it's easier to see you own reflection, or something like that.

Hey Jack, you bet man, will definitely make a point of catching up at NYCC. Actually, that's not far away at all....

Hey Kev,Thanks a lot for all that, it's really sound of you to say. Glad you like the black-and-white as i think that's where my strengths lie. Really glad you enjoyed Frankie too.

Hi Andy, thanks a million for leaving a comment. I appreciate all the comments you made in the review be them positive or negative and i'm really glad you enjoyed it, aside from the two points you made.
To be fair, I can totally see your point. However, the glowing eyes weren't actually my doing, they were the colourists/editorial. My contribution ended with the linework. I don't mean to heap any 'blame' on the colourists at the same time, as in the black and white art, i had left his eyes blank, to make him look more monstrous. I'm sure Kat and Jason were trying to do the same. Classical are of course, producing their graphic novels as close to the source material as possible, but they're also trying to get the attention of younger readers, so the choices on the eyes may have even been an editorial direction, i honestly don't know.
In any case, it was a very balanced review and I was happy with all that was said, which is why i posted the link on my blog. Thanks a million for picking up the book and for writing your review.

All the best,
Dec.
