NYCC 2012
It's that wonderful time of year; New York Comic Con is fast approaching; only days away in fact. If you're looking to get a commission, signatures, or just looking to say hello, just swing by table K2. Just look for the long que of people..... for Rick Remender, who's table is next to mine.
I'll also be signing at the Marvel booth from 1-2pm on Friday.
And be sure to check out the Spider-Man panel from 10:45-11:45 on Sunday, where I'll be on stage talking about Venom.
COMMISSIONS
I'll be taking a limited amount of commissions at the show. I'm planning on only doing 8 commissions a day and I'm not taking any pre-orders, so make sure you get to me early to get on the commission list. Commissions will be $100 for 7.5 x 11' fully inked piece.
Hope to see you all at the show!

SWEET TOOTH and 2011 Wrap-up

Here's a SWEET TOOTH commission. For Jeff Lemire, no less. I was very flattered that Jeff asked for a piece of one of his characters by little old me.
This will be my final post of the year. And what a year it's been. Career highlights included my Crossbones one-shot came out and looked beau-ti-ful thanks to Matt Wilson. I got to draw T-bolts during the big Fear Itself event. I got to actually draw the X-Men in a Marvel comic; that was amazing. Drew the T-Bolts in Ireland, and Spidey in the same issue too! Drew an arc on Northlanders (one of my favourite books) for Vertigo.... it really was the year where I got to fulfil all my childhood aspirations.
So, thanks 2011. Hopefully in 2012 I'll get to do bigger, better and bolder things. My goal for 2012 is to do a comic project with Jordie. She's got great projects at Marvel right now, and I'm getting more and more frustrated that none of them are with me. Let's see if we can make it happen next year.
Thanks to everyone for their support in the last year. It's very much appreciated. Extra special thanks to Jeff Parker, Brian Wood, Matt Wilson, Frank Martin, Dave McCaig, Tom Brennan at Marvel, Mark Doyle at Vertigo ...and all the Irish crowd.
Best,

PUNISHER VS DEADPOOL PENCILS

Here's the pencils to the commission i've been working on; yeah, it's Punisher Vs Deadpool. Fun. Never drew Deadpool before and i've been meaning to do a good Punisher drawing for a while.
Had to change things up from the layout. The original black clouds i was going to do were cluttering things up a big, so i moved them to one side. Made the moon bigger to make it a bit more visually interesting too. Temptation was to go in and add detail on the moon, but i thought it was better off as it was. Whenever i get the feeling i shouldn't add more to a drawing, it's usually the right call. The lack of detail in the sky is balanced by all the junkyard detail, i think. Looking forward to inking this.
Just realized the first issue of Poe was out this week, the one with the fancy cover i did a while back. Must have a look for it in the comic shop. You must, that is.
Gonna be busy for the next few weeks, so posting will be less frequent than the usual every second day, sorry.

COMMISSION SKETCH

I posted some rough doodles for a commission i'm doing a few days ago. People liked a certain layout, so i fleshed it out a little and decided to go with this. Looking forward to drawing it.
Also, just a reminder, tonight is the Comic Cast Birthday Bash; with comedians, live bands, comics and it's free, FREE i tells ya (before 11).
Twisted Pepper, Dublin Town. See ya there.

BATMAN COMMISSION

Hey all. I usually do a big long post about the convention i've just returned from, but i didn't really take any photos, so i'll spare any BICS talk til i get some convention sketches sent to me to illustrate the post. In the meantime, here's a 'Batman-and-Villains' Commission i just completed. Man, i love Batman. This was great fun to draw. Tough though.

AVENGERS ASSEMBLE

Well, two of them at least. A Captain America/ Hawkeye commission.
In other news i got a mention on Lying in the Gutters this week ...kinda. Regarding the forthcoming Tripwire annual...
"...and original strips from Roger Langridge, Jamie McKelvie and Declan Shalve."
Sigh. That's the third time i've gotten a mention in public where my name's been spelt wrong. Maybe i should just change it to O'Brien or something. Still, nice to get the name out there a bit.

BIRDS OF PREY
A commission i finished yesterday. Got a group of commission requests a while ago. This was the second request i received, but unfortunately, the last to get done. This is my 3rd pass at the image; i tried two different compositions, but they just weren't working. Pretty happy with it now .....eventually

PREACHER

A pencilled piece of Jesse from Preacher. Man, i loved that book. I started reading it at just the right time. I guess i must have been fourteen or fifteen, kinda growing out of superhero comics, when i started reading this. Not that i don't like the superhero stuff (i'm still a sucker for that stuff), but by that age, i was lookin' for somethin' different. Man, did i find it. Plus, it had irish characters, with one story featuring the 1916 Rising! It was like the book was written just for me.
Was a lotta fun to draw Jesse....

DOCTOR STRANGE
Finished this last night; another comission. I'd never drawn Doctor Strange properly before, so this was a lot of fun to do. Off to Ireland today, to do a signing in Sub City in Galway this saturday from 12 O'Clock. Come if you dare! Looking forward to a few days home and seeing friends. Probably no posts for a week.
Later, as the kids say,

THE SHADOW --FINISHED
Here's the finished Shadow commission. Since i liked the original sketch so much, i magnified it and lighboxed it onto the artboard. I wanted to keep the image looking 'fresh'. Sometines when you re-draw an image it looks stale, or just not as exciting as the sketch. So by lightboxing the sketch instead of re-drawing it, i thing i manages to keep it feeling loose, while still having a finished piece.
