FRANKENSTEIN WINS U.S. AWARD

Just heard Frankenstein received an award on Friday; given by the Association of Educational Publishers in America, for Distinguished Achievement in grades 9-12. I've been told very notable educational publisher enters these awards, so for Classical Comics to win with their first attempt is a great accomplishment.

Congratulations to Clive Bryant, Jason Cobely, Jon Haward, Jason Cardy, Kat Nicholson and everyone else involved. This is great news.

A full list of the winners can be seen here.

MORE MRS. LOVETT, REVIEWS AND SIGNINGS!

Here's the inks to yesterday's pencils.

Also, i spotted a few of Frankenstein reviews as well as a plug on Sci-Fi online. The reviews are here and also on Grovel (where the art gets 4 stars. That's so Fetch!)

Also, this coming Saturday, i'm returning triumphantly to Aberdeen, Scotland for a signing in Asylum Books and Games. I drew all of Frankenstein in a studio underneath the shop, so it'll be great to go back to unveil the finished product. It'll be 'Ace.'

DUBLIN CITY COMIC CON

As i've mentioned before, this weekend is the Dublin City Comic Con. Featured guests this year include overseas talent like Adi Granov, Olivier Copiel, Jonathan Hickman, Matt Hollingsworth and Esad Ribic as well as two of my favourite artists, Tommy Lee Edwards and Michael Lark. Lets also not forget all the talented Eclectic Micks; Stephen Mooney, Stephen Thompson and Nick Roche.
Also recently added to the bill is new Marvel sensation David Lafuente and ....uh ...me.

I'll be at a couple of panels over the weekend:

On Saturday....

10:15 AM – 11:15 AM

Featuring Stephen Mooney, Stephen Thompson, Nick Roche and Declan Shalvey talking about all aspects of working in the world of Independent comics. This panel is hosted by Mam Tor Editor in Chief Liam Sharp. Who recently published his first novel God killers and is the artist on 2008’s highest selling comic book, Gears of War from Wildstorm Productions.

And on Sunday myself and Andy Winter will be discussing and showing previews of new book Tim Skinner; Total Scumbag in the following panel...

Launch Pad Hosted by Johnathan Hickman.
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

This presentation is a spotlight on up and coming independent Irish Comic Books launching exclusively at this year’s Dublin City Comic Con. There’ll be a range of titles and creators talking about their respective releases. Hosted by Jonathan Hickman, writer and artist of the Nightly News, Pax Romana and architect of the new Marvel Universe Cross Over Event Secret Warriors. This is definitely one not to be missed.

I'll be at Andy's Moonface Press table as much as possible, come by to pick up a copy of Tim Skinner, Frankenstein or any of Andy's previous books, including some of the last remaining Hero Killers. Free sketch with every purchase.

Also, thanks to Joe at the Forbidden Planet International Blog for mentioning the con and Tim Skinner.

PUBLICITY TIME!

Not a lot of drawing done of late, but a lot of publicity. As i mentioned in the last post i had a signing in my home town over the weekend and it went really well. Sold about 60 copies of Frankenstein, It was a great turnout and a great day. Big thanks to everyone who turned up and an extra-big thanks to all the friends and family who showed up too. The radio interview seemed to go well and i got a mention (and photo) in the local paper, The Clare Champion.

Gaze upon the face of beauty!

Also, my interview with Liam and Craig of The Comic Cast went up today. Have a listen. I say 'eh' and 'y'know' a lot. Other than that, it's quite funny (and hopefully a little insightful).

P.S. Do yourself a favour and listen to the track at the end of the interview. It's a band called Fugazi. Consider it part of your punk education kids!

FRANKENSTEIN NOMINATED FOR AWARD

Good news everyone (said in Professor Farnsworth voice); it seems FRANKENSTEIN has been nominated for a CYBILS award.
CYBILS (Children’s and Young Adult Bloggers’) are Web awards for children's literature judged by a panel of 100 bloggers.
The 2008 Nominations for Graphic Novels (Young Adult) include the newly released Frankenstein. It's got some pretty stiff competition. In the same category are Classical Comics' A Christmas Carol, Jayne Eyre and Macbeth. Not only that, but the fantastic Y The Last Man, Cameron Stewart's The Apocalipstix and the absolutely stunning Three Shadows by Cyril Pedrosa are all up against old Frankie. Poor Frankie doesn't stand a chance!
A full list of nominations are available here.

BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL COMICS SHOW 2008!

Well, what can i say? I, as usual at Brum had an absolutely brilliant time. The highlight absolutely being seeing copies of FRANKENSTEIN in print.

Both the Original and Quick text versions of FRANKENSTEIN

Not only was Frankenstein out for Birmingham, but so was A Christmas Carol with wonderful artwork by Mike Collins, and Jane Eyre with amazing painted artwork by John M Burns. I'm pleased to say that Frankenstein sold a little more than the other titles at Birmingham, so i hope that means it holds up a little to the other two fantastic books.

Thanks to Mick for scanning this Frankenstein sketch i did for him at Birmingham.

Birmingham is always great as i get to meet up with old mates, like David Baillie. I finally managed to get a copy of his brilliant Tongue Of The Dead hardcover collection. I also picked up some great books from Andi Watson, and Sean Phillips' Blow Up hardcover sketchbook.

Thanks to Wade for the Daredevil scan.

Strangely enough, i didn't do that many sketches at Brum, not like i'm used to. Then again, i arrived late on Saturday due to the debauchery that occurred on the Friday night launch party. Still, i did some nice sketches, posted here by those who were kind enough to scan and e-mail them. It was great to catch up with mates, and have some decent conversations too, rather than the meet-and-greet that happens at a lot of cons. Seeing Leah Moore, John Reppion, Rufus Dayglo, Si Spurrier, Frazer Irving, Lee O' Connor and the like was, as always, a great pleasure.

Thanks to Dave and Dan for the scan of this Joker sketch.

I'm also delighted that i managed to grab Andy Winter for dinner and talk all things Hero Killers and more importantly, Tim Skinner. Andy told me that he has nearly sold all existing copies of Hero Killers, and has no plans to reprint it. Rob Curley was also at the show. He told me he sold all of the copies of the new Freak Show that he brought.

Thanks to Luke for the Director sketch.

The unfortunate thing about doing a 'con report' is that i forget to mention half the people i talked to/ spent time with. Safe to say i had a great time, and an absolute highlight of my career so far was sitting at the Classical Comics table with all the team, including Kat Nicholson, Jason Cardy and Jason Cobley, signing many, many copies of a project we've all spent a hell of a lot of time on. I've looked at both text versions of the book, and they both turned out great. I was originally fearful that the more text-heavy version would be clunky as regards storytelling, but it reads really well. I'm delighted that certain story beats and pauses translated just the way i wanted them too. Without sounding full of myself, i think the finished Frankenstein book turned out great. I hope ye all check it out.

Huge thanks to James Hodgkins, Shane Chebsey and Andy Baker for organising such a brilliant show. Yet again.

Right, that's enough ranting. Back to work.

FRANKENSTEIN (AND FRIENDS) SIGNING SCHEDULE

Hey kids, with Frankenstein out in two very short weeks (!) i thought it prudent to post a list of where i'm gonna be in the next couple of months in an effort to promote Frankenstein and some other books that are out or coming out over the next couple of months. They include....

FRANKENSTEIN from Classical Comics

FREAK SHOW from Atomic Diner

TRIPWIRE ANNUAL

I'll be at the following;

October 4th-5th; Birmingham International Comics Show (launch of Frankenstein).
November 1st; Sub City Comics, Dublin (launch of the new Freak Show).
November 8th; Ennis Book Shop, Co. Clare.
November 15th; Though Bubble Festival, Leeds

November 22nd; Dublin City Comic Con (launch of Tim Skinner; Total Scumbag).

That's a busy end of year for the Decster.

I also just noticed a review for this year's Tripwire annual on the Down The Tubes Blog. It quite rightly paises the book and it's editor Joel Meadows for such a great publication. I was personally chuffed when my strip was mentioed specifically... "Declan Shalvey, whose No Witnesses is "silent strip" perfection in terms of storytelling."

Eat THAT Bob Byrne!

BIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL COMICS SHOW OCT 4TH-5TH

Hello all, the Birmingham International Comics Show is fast approaching and i've yet to organize myself in any way! Just saw John Cassaday has been added to the already stellar guestlist. Should be some show, but to be fair, i've always had a great time at the Birmingham con. This year's will be a pretty important for myself, as Frankenstein will be unveiled (as long as everything stays on track) and i'm really looking forward to getting the book out there and seeing what people think. I was hoping to have Tim Skinner done for the Brum show too, but it's not very likely. Most likely it'll be done for the Dublin show later in the year.

FRANKENSTEIN PREVIEW

Over the next couple of months there should be preview images going up on various websites, but since I won't be posting for a while, i reckoned i should stick them up here. Ye may have seen some of these in black and white, but here they are in full coloured glory, thanks to the brilliant work of Jason Cardy and Kat Nicholson. They've done a great job on the book, and seeing the results of their labours makes me even more excited about the book coming out.

As you can see, the pages look great, and i'm speaking more of the colours than i am of my linework. Click on the links above to see more of the guys' work and if you're on Deviant Art, be sure to tell them what a great job they're doing.

Right, i'm off. I'll post again when i have a chance/ reason to.

I'VE BEEN 2D 2D FESTIVAL

See what i did there? I'm a genius.

Anyway, last weekend was the 2D Festival, and it's safe to say i had a great time. First and foremost, i'd like to thank the organiser David Campbell for inviting me up and his partner in crime Ciaran Flannagan (and co) for lookin' after me, makin' sure i was fed (since i'm such a picky eater), etc. Thanks to Ciaran for some of these photos too.

A Stormtrooper and Leia with the bad-ass 2D Festival poster. Meant to rob me one of those but forgot.

Both myself and Transformers aficionado Nick Roche got a lift to Derry from Dublin by the ever generous Stephen Mooney and his soon-to-be-bride Jacintha O' Reilly, the only 'Skwah' of the con. It was quite the road-trip. Full of 80s nostalgia , geek-talk and Declan-bashing. We made it up to Derry in time for dinner, which was great. I must say, Derry was a beautiful city. Growing up in County Clare, The North was a different world to me and to meet folk up there was an eye-opening and brilliant experience. The city had a tremendous atmosphere that was steeped in history and i loved it. I'd go back in heartbeat.

Me post a tasty chicken sandwich, doin' some drawing.

Bob Byrne hard at work for once. Good old Luke F at the table and all ......good times.

Charlie Adlard hard at work, Simon Furman also busy, Nick Roche confused and Stephen Mooney pointing at the place he last saw his self respect.

Did some pretty decent sketches i must say. Was kept busy all day. As best i can remember, i did a USS Defiant, a Borg, a nameless girl superhero, a Riddler, a Catwoman, 3 Jokers, a Frankenstein monster, Sin City's Marv, Hellboy and about 15 Batmans! I've only got record of two of 'em. Here they are....

After a hard days work, we were treated to some dinner, then it was off to so the small press/indie panel with a whole host of folk, including Bob Byrne, Smallzone publisher Shane Chebsey and 20,000 League's Alan Nolan. Always a pleasure to see that man. A rare treat to see his hairy chest on the dancefloor, too ...apparently. The panel was good fun, offering me yet another platform to start my career in stand-up comedy, or at least mention the Eagle Award again.

A fun night was soon had by all, including many a shape being pulled on the dancefloor. You know who you are. Including me.

Thanks to everyone who came up and got a sketch, or bought a copy of Tequila, or asked about Frankenstein. Hopefully, i'll see ye next year!

COMIC ART TODAY!

Had a nice surprise waiting for me when i arrived back to Aderdeen this morning...

This is the cover to Comic Art Now, a new book by Dez Skinn i mentioned a few months back. Some artwork of mine is featured in the book along with great (and much more talented) artists like Michael Golden, Duncan Fegredo, Frank Cho, James Hodgkins, Mike Collins, D'Israeli, Neil Edwards, The Luna Brothers, Sean Phillips, Jon Haward, Andi Watson, Alex Ross, Simon Fraser, Laura Howell and Simon Bisley, with an introduction by Mark Millar. Order it here.

The Frankenstein test page i did before starting on the actual book. Colours by the wonderful and talented Lisa Jackson.

Spent the weekend at the Derry Festival, will have more on that tomorrow.

2D FESTIVAL

Had a brilliant time at the Bristol convention last weekend. It was great to catch up with my collegues at Classical and meet friends old and new. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and congratulated me on finishing the Frankenstein book and took an interest in the sample pages provided. I din't win ANOTHER Eagle. It went to David Aja, which is only right. Still, i've become power hungry since last year and need Eagle after Eagle to quensh my insatiable thirst. Hard luck to the Sancho lads and Bob Byrne too. Not a great awards night for the irish contingent, but a lot of fun anyway.

Still on my sabbattical back home in Co. Clare, but thought i'd post reminding folk of next month's 2D Festival. The folks running the festival were kind enough to inviote me this year and from what i heard of last year's festival, it looks to be a cracking weekend. Really looking forward to it. The festival's website has recently been updated, so go check it out. Tell 'em 'Duncan Shalev' sent ya......

FRANKENSTEIN FINISHED!

Yep, as of today, my part of Frankenstein is now completed. Of course, the book still needs to be coloured and lettered, etc, but all the linework is finished. It's been roughly 9 months work and it's really weird to have it done, as i had been working on it for so long, sometimes it seemed like i'd never get to that final page. I can't wait til it's published and out in the world as my very first original graphic novel.

As it happens, there's a fully coloured and lettered 14 page preview up at the Classical Comics website in both Original and Quick texts. Check it out here. Above is the finished cover for the Plain Text version of the book.

Cue more blog silence, as i'm off to home to Ireland for a couple of weels, fitting in the Bristol convention this coming weekend.

FRANKENSTEIN: NOW IN COLOUR

Recently found that some coloured sample pages from Frankenstein are up on the Classical Comics website so i thought i'd show 'em here. These are two of my favourites so far.

Linework by me, colours by Jason Cardy and Kat Nicholson.

It's a really strange experience; seeing someone else colour my work for the first time, especially as i've been doing nothing but black and white books up till now. Also, i'm on my last set of Frankenstein pages, so ive gotten really used to the black and white pages. But i must say, i'm really happy with how these are coming out. Jason and Kat are doing a really great job. The finished product is gonna be a really lush looking book. I've seen a lot more pages, and they look great. If you'd like to see more, head on over to the Classical Comics site.

Thanks to Rich for the heads up.

FRANKENSTEIN COVER

Coming to the end of Frankenstein now, so reckoned it was about time to get the finished cover done. The folks at Classical Comics really liked a pose i had used from a test page i did before i was actually hired for the project, and have used it for promotional purposes to date. I really wanted to do a new cover, as i think my drawing is at a better level now. Also, the monster drawn wasn't the finalized design so it was decided i should do a new cover, making it a reworking of the image they liked so much.

COMIC ART NOW

The end of the month sees the publication of a new 'coffee-table' book by Dez Skinn (author of Comix: The Underground Revolution, ex-editor of Comics International and Warrior) published by Ilex Press. Called Comic Art Now it aims to serve as a directory of some of the best of today's comic artists.

From Dez: "..It gives our industry something it’s long needed… an equivalent to The Creative Handbook, The Art Directory, etc and gives creators a general audience exposure and puts their names/email addresses in the hands of account execs and the like who invariably steal their styles because they don’t know how to find them. Uniquely, unlike the existing directories which charge for inclusion, this book’s selection for inclusion is based on the quality of the art rather than the artist’s bank balance.”

With an introduction my Mark Millar, it features the work of Alex Ross, Lew Stringer, Mike Ploog, John M. Burns, John McCrea. Oh yes ....and myself. It features a never before published Frankenstein page i did, that won't actually appear in the final book.

Really looking forward to seeing this book come out. I'm a sucker for 'artists books' so i'll get a great thrill from getting a book of that sort that i'm actually featured in, especially considering the amount of esteemed talent also in the book.

Published by Ilex Press (UK) and HarperCollins (US) the 10.5" hardback should be on sale on the 27th of March.

Hope ye all get a copy.
